My friend, Lindsay Starr of Phantasm Creations, made the components for the January Component of the Month challenge over at the Art Elements blog. She made cabs out of leather, then domed (using a wet molding technique she outlines here) and painted them. I jumped at the chance when she offered to send me one so I could participate in her challenge and this is what she sent:
I chose some colors of cord I thought might look good with the cab, as well as a few seed beads.
Then I started knotting.
This was my first attempt at a bezel and I cut it apart before I even got a photo of it on the cab. Strike one. I really hated the front of it, although I think the back side (shown) was pretty fun. It came up too far on the front of the cab and the dark color really washed out the colors on the leather. I went back to the drawing board and chose a cord color I never would have considered at first: olive green.
Strike two. I didn't even finish this one. Although I liked the color better, it was still covering up too much of the cab. In desperation, I finally resorted to punching holes all around the edge of the leather and pulling my cord through it. Boy, was that a lot of work and boy, was I wishing I'd had Lindsay do it when she offered (translated: Linsday knows what she's doing with leather and I'm just muddling through).
On the plus side, though, I like this approach. I added a few rows of knotting and a row of seed beads, then finished it off with some curly scallops.
Just stunning, your macrame really sets this piece apart :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
DeleteA truly unique take on leather and macrame techniques Sherri. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYour macrame skills are exceptional and pinching the cab was also a great idea - this way you texturized it, too. I love the colors and the bright seed beads.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWow, Sherri, it's amazing! I love what you did!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWow!!! You knotting techniques are just perfect for this leather cab. I am blown away by this piece. Just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteOh, how beautiful! The macrame is perfect and the effect just stunning. Actually I also put holes in my cab, but I took the fast option: I drilled them with my dremel ;)
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with the cab - the queen in her perfect little place. AND you're smarter than me with the dremel :) I was terrified I was going to mess up the cab poking all those holes with an awl.
DeleteYour knot work is beautiful! I love the organic feel it gives to your design!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteAlways so great to see your inventive use of the mini-macrame! Love your colours as well
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
DeleteI love it Sherri! This one just screamed your name... I'm so glad you made the time to challenge yourself and play along!
ReplyDeleteIt really did, Lindsay. Thanks for including me!
DeleteYou came up with just the right use for your beautiful cab! It turned out so great.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI like the holes - not only can you see more of the cab as you said - its a level of texture and incorporation that I find visually interesting. The setting engaged the cab, not just holds it - if that makes any sense. That cab though - thats an ocean scape! Gorgeous palette.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Your tree was positively inspired!
DeleteI'm glad you persisted with this, despite a couple of false starts, because the end result is stunning. I like the visual interest that is added by the cording running through the holes. The row of beading picks up another color from the cab and gives the design more "zing". I really love this!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda!!
DeleteSherri your macrame just blows me away, it is always incredibly designed, with amazing attention to detail and you have such astonishing skills with colour! This piece is spectacular!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteHeavens Sherri - this is gorgeous! Your knot work confounds me!
